Pre and Post-natal Pilates Classes

(download timetable)

Total Physiotherapy Services’ pre and post-natal pilates classes have been specifically designed by our physiotherapists to:

  • improve your deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscle strength (helping to achieve a flatter tummy)
  • improve your strength and muscle tone
  • improve your flexibility
  • improve your posture
  • help develop your baby’s gross motor development
  • reduce pre-birth and post-birth pain
  • reduce the occurrence of incontinence and pelvic floor discomfort
  • assist labour and reduce post-birth complications

All of which will help you to cope better with the demands of motherhood.

During pregnancy, it is important to exercise regularly and most importantly, safely. Our pregnancy Pilates classes will help you to strengthen and maintain your pelvic floor muscle strength, as well as maintain general strength and flexibility. This can help reduce your risk of pain and discomfort through the pregnancy, as well as giving you the best chance for a smooth delivery and recovery.

After having a baby, many women strive to lose the weight gained through the pregnancy and to ‘get their tummy back’. Incorrect exercises and poor technique can actually increase bulging in the lower tummy. It can also increase the size of an abdominal separation (rectus diastasis), and increase your risk of pelvic floor dysfunction (such as incontinence and prolapse) as well as back pain.

Our classes are run by a physiotherapist in small groups (of no more than 5). This is to ensure appropriate supervision and technique correction for safe and effective exercise. This also enables you to claim sessions through private health funds.

When can I start classes?

Pregnancy Pilates can be started from 12 weeks of pregnancy. You will be required to have a short consultation with the physiotherapist to ensure you are safe to start, and to teach you correct technique. Our Pregnancy Pilates classes are safe to do until full term, unless you have any complications that prevent you from continuing.

Mum and Bub Pilates Classes are safe to start from six weeks post-natally, regardless of whether you have had a vaginal or caesarean delivery. You will be required to have a short consultation with the physiotherapist to ensure you are safe to start, and to teach you correct technique. Mum and Bub classes can be continued until your baby becomes very mobile (crawling).

What should I bring?

Pregnancy Pilates:

  • Water bottle

Mum and Bub Pilates:

  • Your baby – moderate supervision and space is available, but you can otherwise set your baby up on a mat beside you, and include them in some exercises if needed
  • A pram/blanket/mat/bouncer/toys for your baby
  • Water bottle

How long does a class last?

Classes normally last for 45 minutes involving strengthening for the abdominals, buttocks, lower back, shoulders, legs/thighs and pelvic floor

Do I need a referral from my Doctor or Obtestrician?

No this is not essential, but it is advisable that you discuss with your GP and/or Obstetrician about the type of exercises that you are doing. Programs are designed with extensive and highly qualified experience in the fields of Paediatric Early development and Women’s Health, and are conducted by an experienced physiotherapist.

What does a typical session involve?

The sessions involve use of a fitball/gymball, mat work, stretchbands and therabands for various strengthening and flexibility exercises.

What else is offered at Total Physiotherapy Services (Morningside) for a new mother?

We offer not only all relevant pre and post birth exercise and rehabilitation, but also Clinical Pilates (using Pilates reformers and Pilates Chair); Personal Training classes (Weight Training; Boxing; Bosu Ball) including thorough fitness assessment before and during; Yoga sessions; Stretchband Classes (not performed any where else in Australia) for strength and fitness and also on-site highly professional and experienced physiotherapy; deep tissue and remedial massage; podiatry and acupuncture/Traditional Chinese Medicine.
